“Clay. It’s rain, dead leaves, dust, all my dead ancestors. Stones that have been ground into sand.  Mud. The whole cycle of life and death.” Martine Vermeulen.

British Columbia’s Pacific shoreline influences my pottery.  Earth Mommas are sculpted using red terracotta clay. Their relaxed, unadorned, round bodies are solidly connected to the earth. Each Momma holds a natural found object and so communicates a unique message of love and support. My masks are inspired from a particular forest or water dweller, and are white high-fire clay.  A mask may whisper, sleep, sing, watch, guard or…. Each has a particular reason for hanging in one’s home; they may comfort, teach, remind, give insight, give joy or… I like to drape sheets of high fire raw stoneware clay over rocks, found in the rivers of Vancouver Island, and shape functional food containers. The rocks, to me, seem magically to infuse “an energy of rockness” to the clay which reminds me that rocks too are filled with life energy. This pottery comes from my “wild” side.  I also like to do pottery which comes from my “civilized” side but that’s another story.
